Recreational Therapist

Career Description

Recreational therapists, also known as therapeutic recreation specialists, work with individuals with
physical, social or emotional disabilities. Through recreation activities, the therapist assists in eliminating
barriers to leisure and developing leisure skills. This may mean enabling a handicapped individual to use
a public recreational facility, helping a shy patient socialize with peers or exposing an individual to a new
and exciting experience.

Academic Requirements

These programs offer various degrees, including associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate. Although an associate’s degree may suffice for some nursing home or community positions, hospitals and larger clinical facilities generally require a bachelor’s degree and additional certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation.
